Can hype ruin a movie ?

We have all been there, that one movie that we have been hyped to see all year, and then the fateful day comes when the movie drops, and you head into the theater with your ticket in hand and your mind full of hope for just how great the movie will be, but unfortunately you exit the cinema disappointed and let down.

I mean we cannot help it, the day that we hear that a movie adaptation of a book or a comic book we love is announced we practically lose it and become extremely excited, one might even say hyped, however, let me be clear, by no means am I saying that being hyped for a movie is a bad thing, far from it really, as hype can really help the movie by selling merchandise and promotion but at a certain point some movies are hurt by overhyping them.

Perhaps one of the best glaring examples of overhyping is the sequel to the phenomenal Ghostbusters, as we all were really excited to get more of the hilarious plot and characters we had in the first movie and it was hyped to hell and back just because of how great the first movie was, and unfortunately the movie flopped, and what would have been just a bad flick turned into one of the worst sequels ever because of the blind hype it got.

However by a long shot the worst case senario of being overhyped is Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace, this movie was obliterated by the hate it got and is still getting, I am not saying that the movie would have been better if we had not been so hyped for it as it had a horrible plot and awful CGI, however it still could have been better received if we had not been so excited for it, my point is illustrated by the massive financial success that it got, as it was the highest grossing movie at the time, so that clearly shows that fans were really excited to see it and unfortuantly their trust was betrayed, and this movie is now considered one of the worst if not the worst sequel/prequel.

At the end of the day, hype is a double-edged sword as it can either make or break a flick.Surprisingly some movies do live up to the hype like Mad Max: Fury Road, and I myself have been hyped up for a lot of movies, so we can be hyped for something but we should be careful because if we get way too hyped for the wrong movies we might just be setting ourselves to get let down hard.
