Personally i think that comedy is a great movie genre which is, unfortunately, is undersold most of the time because of the plethora of bad comedy movies, and the risk that comes with making comedy movies because comedy most of the time it is subjective and you really can not predict how an audience might react to your jokes, sometimes it turns out and we get amazing masterpieces like Anchorman or the Cornetto trilogy, however that is not the case with these movies that I am going to list.
The original mask was got mixed responses but I found it to be a comedic gem, with an absoloutly priceless preformce by Jim Carrey, however, this well, sequel/spinoff or whatever it is, because it really does not explain itself, nor does it justify its existence at all, the plot follows the hijinks of a guy who finds the mask and somehow it finds itself to his son and gives him powers, I say some guy because you can replace him with a cardboard box and still get the same experience, none of the characters are fleshed out or interesting, save for loki who somehow finds himself in this movie; Oh my god the CGI is bad, somehow the original has better effects, ponder the fact that the orignial had been made for nearly 15 years at the time this movie had been made, this movie's effects are downright terrifying, and the comedy itself is horrible, no joke is clever at all, the movie honestly does not need to exist.
Where do I begin with this sorry excuse for a movie, there is literary no saving grace for it, no character is funny or interesting, most are extremely bland and unfunny, and with Dana Carvey I expected a whole lot more as he is really funny on SNL, but even he can't save this movie, because his character is possibly the worst in the movie, I cannot remember a single time that I even chuckled much less laugh, at some points I had to pause the movie beucase of the amount of awkwardness on screen, if the movie was a satire of comedy it wouldve fared better with a considerable amount of changes to the screenplay, but alas what we got was not even serviceable.
This movie shouldn't exist period, it is the best example of what movies should not do, I really cannot believe that our once beloved Adam Sandler made this, I mean yes his career has been on the decline for many years but even for him this movie is too low, after its release the movie became a synonym for bad flicks, I really like Adam but even I can not excuse this film, the comedy is inexcusable, this is to be expected as it follows the Adam Sandler formula where he gets his friends like Kevin James and Rob shnider to be in the movie, all while product placement is shoved down our throats, the best example of that is the actual plot as it revolves around dunkin donouts, no I am not joking, there is this one scene that had me exteremly furious, it consists of Adam's character talking to another plot device while peptobismal is infront of them for the entire 3 minutes, I am pretty sure that says enough about why this movie is horrible.
