2017 has been a wonderful year for us movie goers, with the likes of " wonder woman, Thor : Ragnarok, Get out and logan" blowing us away with their amazing stories and interesting characters, however this year has also brought us a lot of fails, from expected fails to surprising bombs that no one would have expected.
Honestly i expected more from Guy Richie, he is a good director that knows how to direct a movie and get it from a small budget to a sky rocketing success, however he did not hit it out of the park with King Arthur, the movie's incredible budget of 175$ million should have been a blessing, but it turned out to be a curse, as the movie flopped, it goes to show that movie goers these days just aren't interested in new spins of old tales, only select companies can make a profit out of that, and it does not help that the movie itself is prequel, a measly origin story for king Arthur, a " Story before the story" which is not what audiences want at all, moreover the movie had talent, as Jude law is a great actor that makes for a cunning villain, and Charlie Hunnum is a great actor too, both have the potential to create a box office success, but the material they were working with has been used one too many times.
To be frank i did not expect much from this flick, as it doesn't have any big names or great upcoming actors in it, but i still wanted it to be a success and not bomb because we need new ideas and new franchises in Hollywood, but with making a measly 5$ million in its first weekend out of a 40$ million budget it is apparent that it bombed hard, it could be said that a movie does not need huge A-list actors to be good, and that is true, but with a concept so ridiculous the movie needed a stilt to lean on, and we can see that the movie is inspired in some way by shutter island so it had hope even with a concept so peculiar , but in no way is it as good as the movies it drew inspiration from.
Oh Stephen King, just how many of your books have had movie adaptations that don't do them justice, but i guess after the success of "IT" everyone would think that the dark tower should be great, as the source material is wonderful, King provides great material to work with, however even with such great backbone the movie still failed, with a budget of 60$ million it took home 111$ million, and with names as big as Mathew Mcconaughey and Idris Elba you would expect the movie to be a success as it is not short on talent, but with it being an hour shorter than marvel movies it felt rushed, and anyone who has read any King novel knows that a PG-13 does not fit it at all, however with a TV series rumored this franchise might be saved.
To me this is a personal let down, i have been a comic book fan for as long as i can remember and just like all DC fan i have been waiting for the famed Justice league to come to life on the big screen for years, but unfortunately the movie that we all have been waiting for has failed us, in its first weekend it got 94$ million, which is a staggering 72$ million less than Batman V Superman made, moreover the sudden change of directors did not help, as Whedon tried to turn the movie to another Avengers but that just does not fit the feel and atmosphere the DCEU has at all, in what universe does the brooding Batman crack jokes, and how is superman able to defeat all the league members alone with no effort, it had the ingredients for a great film as it has amazing source material and the movie is not short on great actors, furthermore the now infamous WB scissors cut many scenes we wanted to see, as even the new Flash suit we all wanted to see got cut, perhaps if Snyder continued directing it we would've gotten what we wanted, but for now we can just hope that the DCEU can survive.
