Most of us think of video games as a hobby that lets us relax and enjoy ourselves, however, there is a section of gamers that prefer their games nailing bitingly hard, but does that harm others? I enjoy a hard game as much as the next guy but a lot of people want their games laid back and easy, so the question now is if the demand for hard games impacts others who like easy games.
The easiest example of a hard game is dark souls and the demon souls, as they are notorious for their extreme difficulty, and they have their charm, as the mere satisfaction of finally beating a level you have been stuck on gives you euphoria and relief, moreover the way these game present themselves is intoxicating, as the environment and architecture are breathtaking, and the formula is clearly working as the games are as succesful as they come, however, is the humongous success that these games get pressuring game developers to make their games hard ?
In a way yes, as we have seen a resurgence of extremely hard indie games, possibly one of the best indie titles this year has been Cuphead, this game has won over gamers with its unique visual style, one that obviously has a 50's cartoon feel, quite frankly it is beautiful, however, what really gripped gamers is just how hard the game is, people have been seen raging uncontrollably while playing it, so to be honest in a way yes developers are beginning to see just how well a hard game will sell, I mean for the first time ever Assassin's Creed finally has difficulty option, that ofcourse does not mean that easy games are going extinct, it merely displays a point about how the majority of gamers like a challenege.
