Are Found footage movies lazy ?

Found footage movies have been usually hit and miss because they usually rely on us being terrified of what our character sees and nothing else, pretty much it counts on the fear of the unknown, thus they have considerably small budgets, some are huge successes and bank at the box office, thus the discussion came up arguing that these movies are lazy and are looking for a quick buck, but is that true ?

In a way no, because these movies still need a certain amount of effort to be put in, and most of the time they are independent movies made by small groups, sometimes it is funded by just one person and no matter what you think, putting up to 15$ thousand dollars into a single project and not knowing whether it will break even or not is a big gamble; Furthermore sometimes the concepts explored by these movies are quite intriguing to delve into, take Cloverfield for example, it followed the story about how some normal civilians are going to try and survive a huge monster attack.

On the other hand, some are extremely stupid and unoriginal, like the paranormal movies, take them for an example, they made nearly 5 movies out of a stupid haunting that follows horrible characters, and such an idiotic plot, but somehow these movies still banked, and that is because they exploit our fear of what we cannot see, even if not all of it is handheld most of it is, and somehow that series nearly made 10x its starting budget.

But I must concede my point because these movies are subjective, some view them as an omen of the end times while others obsess over them I lay in the middle ground, because some are actually smart, while others are stupid, in the end i would like to think that even movies as cheap as these can be entertaining.
